The job is diagnosing and repairing electric vehicles and their advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). That means high-voltage battery packs and electric drivetrains. It also means the LiDAR, radar, and camera arrays that power self-driving and assistance features. Diagnostics run through manufacturer-specific AI platforms that read telemetry data and pinpoint faults. Safety protocols around high-voltage components are strict and non-negotiable. The industry shift to EVs has created a demand that traditional mechanic training programs cannot fill fast enough.

A Day in This Role

A Tesla rolls in with a battery management alert. AI diagnostics run first. The fault codes and thermal data tell the technician whether a module needs to come out or just a reset will hold. Midday means a different car with a different problem: ADAS cameras and sensors that have to be recalibrated after windshield work, verified through a test drive with diagnostics streaming the whole way. The afternoon is routine service on an electric fleet vehicle. Brakes, software updates, paperwork.

Common Interview Topics

  • 01Walk through the safety lockout/tagout procedure you follow before working on a 400V+ battery pack
  • 02A Tesla is showing a battery management fault but no obvious cell damage, describe your diagnostic approach using telemetry data
  • 03Explain how you would recalibrate a full ADAS sensor suite (cameras, radar, LiDAR) after a windshield replacement
  • 04Describe the key differences in brake system maintenance between a regenerative braking EV and a conventional vehicle
  • 05How do you stay current with rapidly changing EV technology when each manufacturer has different systems and diagnostics?
