Raw EHR data is useless until someone turns it into a decision. That is this role. Dashboards and reports get built from EHR data and claims databases. Patient registries feed into the same pipeline. AI tools now surface patterns that traditional BI methods miss. The work spans clinical quality reporting and population health risk stratification. Operational efficiency analysis sits next to it. So does regulatory compliance. The role becomes the connector between clinical teams and hospital leadership, with IT as a constant collaborator.

A Day in This Role
An anomaly detection script catches an unexpected readmission spike in two diagnosis groups overnight. That finding sets the morning's investigation. Midday goes to building a Tableau dashboard for the quality improvement committee, hospital-acquired infection rates by unit, with AI-generated trend forecasts layered on top. The afternoon is SQL work against the EHR data warehouse, pulling a list of high-risk diabetic patients who missed follow-ups. Then a meeting with care management to figure out which ones get called first.
Common Interview Topics
- 01A hospital's 30-day heart failure readmission rate just exceeded the CMS penalty threshold, walk through how you would use AI-assisted analytics to identify the root causes and recommend targeted interventions
- 02You are asked to build a population health risk model that predicts which diabetic patients are most likely to visit the ED in the next 90 days, describe your data sources, feature selection, and how you would validate the model with clinicians
- 03The chief nursing officer wants a real-time staffing dashboard that predicts patient census by unit, explain how you would source the data, handle missing values, and present AI-generated forecasts in a way nurses trust
- 04You discover that a key clinical quality metric has been calculated incorrectly in the EHR reporting module for six months, outline your investigation, impact assessment, and communication plan
- 05Describe how you would evaluate whether an AI-powered coding assistance tool is improving coding accuracy and revenue capture without introducing upcoding compliance risk
